Ten Warning Signs That Your Child May Be the Victim of
a Bully

Bullying is a very old and widespread problem. Most of us can recall episodes of bullying from our school years. It is important for us to recognize, however, that bullying is never okay. It is not a normal part of growing up. As a culture, we are focusing new attention on bullying. Bullying is an issue of increasing importance for schools and the community at large. It is an abuse of power and its targets are usually vulnerable in some way. It is important that we are able to identify the victims of bullies in order to help them. Listed below are the warning signs to look for in a child who is being bullied.
1. Shows a sudden lack of interest in school or a refusal to go to school.
2. Takes an unusual route to school (i.e. walking 3 blocks out of her way).
3. Suffers from a sudden drop in grades.
4. Withdraws from family and school activities.
5. Is hungry after school or lunch money is often lost.
6. Has many sudden mood swings.
7. Has torn or missing clothing.
8. Has physical injuries inconsistent with explanation.
9. Begins to have stomachaches, headaches, or panic attacks.
10. Is unable to sleep or sleeps too much.
What to Do if You See
the Warning Signs
Believe your child
Remind her that she is not alone and it is not her fault
Encourage him to express his feelings
Clearly identify the problem
Brainstorm possible solutions
Discuss possible outcomes
Let her know what she can expect from you and school personnel
Be supportive
Follow-up with your child and with the school to ensure that the matter is handled properly
