YSB Offers New Group “Courageous Kids” to help and support youth of all ages with chronic illness

The Youth Service Bureau is starting a group for youth of all ages who have a chronic illness. For young people a chronic illness can be frightening. They may not understand why it is happening to them and feel alone and isolated. They may experience anxiety, anger and stress. It can have an impact in their self esteem, family life, peer relationships and in school. The group will provide youth with the opportunity to connect with others in the same situation. In this group they will learn valuable coping skills, share how they can stay healthy, and most importantly, learn that they are not alone. Youth dealing with any type of chronic illness are welcome to attend; diabetes, asthma, epilepsy, etc. Although these are very different diseases, young people with them, have a lot in common. Families with children who could benefit from this group should call YSB Intake at 815-338-7360. Names are being taken and when the group begins participants will be notified of the start date. The fee for this program is $10 per session or $50 in advance for 6 group sessions.   The group is open and ongoing group.   This group will be facilitated by a male and female therapist.

YSB licensed clinical social workers and counselors have experience and expertise in helping youth in every aspect of their social and emotional development. YSB runs groups routinely for a wide range of issues they face. This new group is addressing a need in the county YSB has identified as being underserved. A new feature on the YSB website allows for community feedback and suggestions for group ideas.
