Do you want a fun way to remember your baby’s babyhood?

One fun way to remember your child’s very small cuteness is to make a plaster cast of her hand or foot.  It’s amazing how quickly they grow and how quickly we forget how small they really were.  This is also something that your child will love to look at when she is older.

Dough recipe:

1 16 ounce box baking soda

1 cup cornstarch

1 and ¼ cups cold water

1 tablespoon vegetable oil

Directions:

Mix baking soda and corn starch together.  Put into a pot and mix with water and oil.  Cook over medium heat, stirring constantly.  Mixture should become the consistency of mashed potatoes after about 10-15 minutes.  Do not cook too long or the plaque may crack later.

Remove mixture to a bowl or plate, cover with a damp cloth so it will not dry out, and wait for it to cool.  When it is cool enough to handle, knead on a breadboard or table that has been dusted with cornstarch.  Knead until smooth.  Shape it into the shape you want for the plaque.

Gently press your baby’s hand or foot into the cooled, shaped dough while it is still damp and soft.  You can either carve the name and date into the soft dough or wait until it dries and write on it with permanent markers.
